A comprehensive preparation guide for international professionals interviewing for European roles.
Before the Interview
- ✓ Research the company: products, mission, recent news, engineering blog, tech stack
- ✓ Research your interviewers: LinkedIn profiles, their background and role
- ✓ Prepare 5-7 career stories using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
- ✓ Review the job description and prepare examples that match each key requirement
- ✓ Prepare questions to ask the interviewer (see section below)
- ✓ Test your internet connection, camera and microphone if the interview is virtual
- ✓ Choose a quiet, well-lit room with a neutral background for video calls
- ✓ Prepare a glass of water and have your notes visible but out of camera frame
Common Interview Questions
- ✓ Tell me about yourself — prepare a 2-minute summary of your career journey, key skills and why you are looking for this opportunity
- ✓ Why do you want to work in Europe? — be honest about your motivation, connect it to professional growth and specific opportunities in the region
- ✓ Describe a challenging project you worked on — use STAR format, focus on your contribution and the outcome
- ✓ How do you handle conflict in a team? — show self-awareness, communication skills and a focus on resolution
- ✓ Where do you see yourself in 5 years? — connect your ambition to the role and the company's growth
- ✓ Why are you leaving your current role? — stay positive, focus on growth opportunities rather than complaints
- ✓ Describe a time you failed — show honesty, learning and what you changed as a result
STAR Method — Example Structure
- ✓ Situation: Set the context — 'Our team was responsible for a legacy monolith that took 2 weeks to deploy'
- ✓ Task: Define your mission — 'I was asked to lead the migration to microservices to improve deployment frequency'
- ✓ Action: Describe what you did — 'I designed a phased migration strategy, set up CI/CD pipelines in GitLab, and coordinated with 4 backend teams across time zones to minimize disruption'
- ✓ Result: Show the impact — 'We reduced deployment time from 2 weeks to 4 hours and improved rollback success rate from 60% to 98% within 6 months'
- ✓ Use specific numbers: percentages, timeframes, team size, users affected, revenue impact
- ✓ Focus on YOUR contribution — avoid 'we' without clarifying your specific role
Technical Interview Tips
- ✓ For coding interviews: practice on LeetCode or HackerRank in the language you will use in the role
- ✓ For system design interviews: study common patterns (scalability, microservices, data pipelines, real-time systems)
- ✓ For DevOps interviews: be ready to discuss incident response, monitoring strategies, CI/CD pipeline design, and infrastructure-as-code
- ✓ For data interviews: prepare to discuss data modeling, pipeline architecture, A/B testing methodology and analytical approaches
- ✓ For product management interviews: prepare to discuss prioritization frameworks, user research methods, and stakeholder management
- ✓ Practice explaining your thought process out loud — interviewers want to see how you think, not just the final answer
- ✓ It is acceptable to say 'I do not know, but here is how I would approach finding the answer' — honesty is valued in European tech cultures
Virtual Interview Tips
- ✓ Test your audio and video before every interview — use the same setup you will use during the call
- ✓ Use a wired internet connection if possible for stability
- ✓ Keep your camera at eye level and maintain eye contact by looking at the camera, not the screen
- ✓ Minimize distractions: close unnecessary browser tabs, silence notifications, inform household members
- ✓ Screen sharing: prepare your environment in advance, close sensitive tabs, and practice sharing the right window
- ✓ Time zones: confirm the interview time in YOUR time zone and set multiple reminders
- ✓ Follow up with a thank-you email within 24 hours, referencing specific topics discussed
